Battery Charger Product Highlights

Many battery chargers used in small AC Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) lack the power to quickly recharge extended run-time batteries. SENS TD Series chargers are used with the external extended run-time battery to ensure fast and safe recharging of large batteries (>30 minutes battery backup). Chargers are available in a wide variety of sizes for any duration battery. For high-power applications, the TD is used in parallel or series to recharge any battery capacity.

Operates in parallel with UPS charger
The TD charger is connected to the UPS system DC bus. The bus connects the battery, UPS charger and TD charger. The TD charger is compatible with constant voltage,current-limited UPS chargers, and it requires no blocking diode.

Battery Charger Open Frame
Wide output adjustment range
Adjustable output voltage allows one charger to be adjusted for many different battery configurations at the time of installation. For example, the 240-volt TD charger is field-adjustable for any lead-acid battery between 90 and 120 cells. This feature reduces part numbers, thereby lowering procurement and stocking costs for OEMs.

Open frame design or fully enclosed
Many OEMs and VARs install the TD charger in a battery cabinet or their own UL-listed housing, eliminating the need for a charger housing. The TD charger is also available in a SENS wall mount or 19" relay rack housing for open area applications.

Precision regulated electronic control
The TD's electronic control system combines accurate voltage regulation and reliable charger operation. This ensures fast battery recharging and long battery life.

Temperature compensated
The temperature-compensated control circuit provides the correct voltage to VRLA batteries in all conditions. The standard remote temperature sensor provides the most accurate battery temperature reading possible. Temperature compensation reduces the possibility of battery thermal runaway and extends battery life.

Wide range of input voltages
Field selectable jumpers allow standard chargers to be configured for 120, 208 or 240 volts, 60 Hz. Also, 220/230/240 volts, 50 Hz input are available. Regardless of output setting, chargers stay within +1% voltage regulation over the specified input voltage window.

Automatic protection circuitry
TD chargers include a standard high-charger voltage shutdown. The high voltage shutdown point of 3% to 5% above the float voltage setting of the charger automatically moves as the output voltage is adjusted for different battery voltages. This ensures the high-volt shutdown is always at the correct level even when field adjusted by OEM or VAR customers.

UL recognized
Underwriters' Laboratories recognize 60 Hz versions.

Small size
The TD's compact design offers high efficiency in small spaces. The chargers are easily installed in space-restricted UPS applications, and can be mounted in any orientation including horizontal, vertical and inverted.

Formula for calculating charger ampacity

  Battery consumption in watts* 1.15
Avg battery discharge voltage* hours recharge time

Example for a 240-volt nominal battery from which 4,730 watts is withdrawn:

 4730* 1.15   = 2.42 amps; use TD240-3-MA10 charger
  225* 10

Determine the battery average volts on discharge by averaging the battery nominal voltage with the end of discharge voltage. For long duration lead acid UPS battery this will be 1.75 volts per cell.
